The Call of Cthulhu by H.P. Lovecraft

Written Summer 1926

Of such great powers or beings there may be conceivably a survival... a survival of a hugely remote period when... consciousness was manifested, perhaps, in shapes and forms long since withdrawn before the tide of advancing humanity... forms of which poetry and legend alone have caught a flying memory and called them gods, monsters, mythical beings of all sorts and kinds...
- Algernon Blackwood

                                                       I. The Horror In Clay
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.
Theosophists have guessed at the awesome grandeur of the cosmic cycle wherein our world and human race form transient incidents. They have hinted at strange survivals in terms which would freeze the blood if not masked by a bland optimism. But it is not from them that there came the single glimpse of forbidden eons which chills me when I think of it and maddens me when I dream of it. That glimpse, like all dread glimpses of truth, flashed out from an accidental piecing together of separated things - in this case an old newspaper item and the notes of a dead professor. I hope that no one else will accomplish this piecing out; certainly, if I live, I shall never knowingly supply a link in so hideous a chain. I think that the professor, too intented to keep silent regarding the part he knew, and that he would have destroyed his notes had not sudden death seized him.
My knowledge of the thing began in the winter of 1926-27 with the death of my great-uncle, George Gammell Angell, Professor Emeritus of Semitic Languages in Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island. Professor Angell was widely known as an authority on ancient inscriptions, and had frequently been resorted to by the heads of prominent museums; so that his passing at the age of ninety-two may be recalled by many. Locally, interest was intensified by the obscurity of the cause of death. The professor had been stricken whilst returning from the Newport boat; falling suddenly; as witnesses said, after having been jostled by a nautical-looking negro who had come from one of the queer dark courts on the precipitous hillside which formed a short cut from the
waterfront to the deceased's home in Williams Street. Physicians were unable to find any visible disorder, but concluded after perplexed debate that some obscure lesion of the heart, induced by the brisk ascent of so steep a hill by so elderly a man, was responsible for the end. At the time I saw no reason to dissent from this dictum, but latterly I am inclined to wonder - and more than wonder.
As my great-uncle's heir and executor, for he died a childless widower, I was expected to go over his papers with some thoroughness; and for that purpose moved his entire set of files and boxes to my quarters in Boston. Much of the material which I correlated will be later published by the American Archaeological Society, but there was one box which I found exceedingly puzzling, and which I felt much averse from showing to other eyes. It had been locked and I did not find the key till it occurred to me to examine the personal ring which the professor carried in his pocket. Then, indeed, I succeeded in opening it, but when I did so seemed only to be confronted by a greater and more closely locked barrier. For what could be the meaning of the queer clay bas-relief and the disjointed jottings, ramblings, and cuttings which I found? Had my uncle, in his latter years become credulous of the most superficial impostures? I resolved to search out the eccentric sculptor responsible for this apparent disturbance of an old man's peace of mind.
The bas-relief was a rough rectangle less than an inch thick and about five by six inches in area; obviously of modern origin. Its designs, however, were far from modern in atmosphere and suggestion; for, although the vagaries of cubism and futurism are many and wild, they do not often reproduce that cryptic regularity which lurks in prehistoric writing. And writing of some kind the bulk of these designs seemed certainly to be; though my memory, despite much the papers and collections of my uncle, failed in any way to identify this particular species, or even hint at its remotest affiliations.
Above these apparent hieroglyphics was a figure of evident pictorial intent, though its impressionistic execution forbade a very clear idea of its nature. It seemed to be a sort of monster, or symbol representing a monster, of a form which only a diseased fancy could conceive. If I say that my somewhat extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature, I shall not be unfaithful to the spirit of the thing. A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings; but it was the general outline of the whole which made it most shockingly frightful. Behind the figure was a vague suggestions of a Cyclopean architectural background.
The writing accompanying this oddity was, aside from a stack of press cuttings, in Professor Angell's most recent hand; and made no pretense to literary style. What seemed to be the main document was headed "CTHULHU CULT" in characters painstakingly printed to avoid the erroneous reading of a word so unheard-of. This manuscript was divided into two sections, the first of which was headed "1925 - Dream and Dream Work of H.A. Wilcox, 7 Thomas St., Providence, R. I.", and the second, "Narrative of Inspector John R. Legrasse, 121 Bienville St., New Orleans, La., at 1908 A. A. S. Mtg. - Notes on Same, & Prof. Webb's Acct." The other manuscript papers were brief notes, some of them accounts of the queer dreams of different persons, some of them citations from theosophical books and magazines (notably W. Scott-Elliot's Atlantis and the Lost Lemuria), and the rest comments on long-surviving secret societies and hidden cults, with
references to passages in such mythological and anthropological source-books as Frazer's Golden Bough and Miss Murray's Witch-Cult in Western Europe. The cuttings largely alluded to outré mental illness and outbreaks of group folly or mania in the spring of 1925.
The first half of the principal manuscript told a very particular tale. It appears that on March 1st, 1925, a thin, dark young man of neurotic and excited aspect had called upon Professor Angell bearing the singular clay bas-relief, which was then exceedingly damp and fresh. His card bore the name of Henry Anthony Wilcox, and my uncle had recognized him as the youngest son of an excellent family slightly known to him, who had latterly been studying sculpture at the Rhode Island School of Design and living alone at the Fleur-de-Lys Building near that institution. Wilcox was a precocious youth of known genius but great eccentricity, and had from chidhood excited attention through the strange stories and odd dreams he was in the habit of relating. He called himself "psychically hypersensitive", but the staid folk of the ancient commercial city dismissed him as merely "queer." Never mingling much with his kind, he had dropped gradually from social visibility, and was now known only to a small group of esthetes from other towns. Even the Providence Art Club, anxious to preserve its conservatism, had found him quite hopeless.
On the ocassion of the visit, ran the professor's manuscript, the sculptor abruptly asked for the benefit of his host's archeological knowledge in identifying the hieroglyphics of the bas-relief. He spoke in a dreamy, stilted manner which suggested pose and alienated sympathy; and my uncle showed some sharpness in replying, for the conspicuous freshness of the tablet implied kinship with anything but archeology. Young Wilcox's rejoinder, which impressed my uncle enough to make him recall and record it verbatim, was of a fantastically poetic cast which must have typified his whole conversation, and which I have since found highly characteristic of him. He said, "It is new, indeed, for I made it last night in a dream of strange cities; and dreams are older than brooding Tyre, or the contemplative Sphinx, or garden-girdled Babylon."
It was then that he began that rambling tale which suddenly played upon a sleeping memory and won the fevered interest of my uncle. There had been a slight earthquake tremor the night before, the most considerable felt in New England for some years; and Wilcox's imagination had been keenly affected. Upon retiring, he had had an unprecedented dream of great Cyclopean cities of Titan blocks and sky-flung monoliths, all dripping with green ooze and sinister with latent horror. Hieroglyphics had covered the walls and pillars, and from some undetermined point below had come a voice that was not a voice; a chaotic sensation which only fancy could transmute into sound, but which he attempted to render by the almost unpronounceable jumble of letters: "Cthulhu fhtagn."
This verbal jumble was the key to the recollection which excited and disturbed Professor Angell. He questioned the sculptor with scientific minuteness; and studied with frantic intensity the bas-relief on which the youth had found himself working, chilled and clad only in his night clothes, when waking had stolen bewilderingly over him. My uncle blamed his old age, Wilcox afterwards said, for his slowness in recognizing both hieroglyphics and pictorial design. Many of his questions seemed highly out of place to
his visitor, especially those which tried to connect the latter with strange cults or societies; and Wilcox could not understand the repeated promises of silence which he was offered in exchange for an admission of membership in some widespread mystical or paganly religious body. When Professor Angell became convinced that the sculptor was indeed ignorant of any cult or system of cryptic lore, he besieged his visitor with demands for future reports of dreams. This bore regular fruit, for after the first interview the manuscript records daily calls of the young man, during which he related startling fragments of nocturnal imaginery whose burden was always some terrible Cyclopean vista of dark and dripping stone, with a subterrene voice or intelligence shouting monotonously in enigmatical sense-impacts uninscribable save as gibberish. The two sounds frequently repeated are those rendered by the letters "Cthulhu" and "R'lyeh."
On March 23, the manuscript continued, Wilcox failed to appear; and inquiries at his quarters revealed that he had been stricken with an obscure sort of fever and taken to the home of his family in Waterman Street. He had cried out in the night, arousing several other artists in the building, and had manifested since then only alternations of unconsciousness and delirium. My uncle at once telephoned the family, and from that time forward kept close watch of the case; calling often at the Thayer Street office of Dr. Tobey, whom he learned to be in charge. The youth's febrile mind, apparently, was dwelling on strange things; and the doctor shuddered now and then as he spoke of them. They included not only a repetition of what he had formerly dreamed, but touched wildly on a gigantic thing "miles high" which walked or lumbered about.
He at no time fully described this object but occasional frantic words, as repeated by Dr. Tobey, convinced the professor that it must be identical with the nameless monstrosity he had sought to depict in his dream-sculpture. Reference to this object, the doctor added, was invariably a prelude to the young man's subsidence into lethargy. His temperature, oddly enough, was not greatly above normal; but the whole condition was otherwise such as to suggest true fever rather than mental disorder.
On April 2 at about 3 P.M. every trace of Wilcox's malady suddenly ceased. He sat upright in bed, astonished to find himself at home and completely ignorant of what had happened in dream or reality since the night of March 22. Pronounced well by his physician, he returned to his quarters in three days; but to Professor Angell he was of no further assistance. All traces of strange dreaming had vanished with his recovery, and my uncle kept no record of his night-thoughts after a week of pointless and irrelevant accounts of thoroughly usual visions.
Here the first part of the manuscript ended, but references to certain of the scattered notes gave me much material for thought - so much, in fact, that only the ingrained skepticism then forming my philosophy can account for my continued distrust of the artist. The notes in question were those descriptive of the dreams of various persons covering the same period as that in which young Wilcox had had his strange visitations. My uncle, it seems, had quickly instituted a prodigiously far-flung body of inquires amongst nearly all the friends whom he could question without impertinence, asking for nightly reports of their dreams, and the dates of any notable visions for some time past. The reception of his request seems to have varied; but he must, at the very least, have received more responses than any ordinary man could have handled without a secretary. This original
correspondence was not preserved, but his notes formed a thorough and really significant digest. Average people in society and business - New England's traditional "salt of the earth" - gave an almost completely negative result, though scattered cases of uneasy but formless nocturnal impressions appear here and there, always between March 23 and and April 2 - the period of young Wilcox's delirium. Scientific men were little more affected, though four cases of vague description suggest fugitive glimpses of strange landscapes, and in one case there is mentioned a dread of something abnormal.
It was from the artists and poets that the pertinent answers came, and I know that panic would have broken loose had they been able to compare notes. As it was, lacking their original letters, I half suspected the compiler of having asked leading questions, or of having edited the correspondence in corroboration of what he had latently resolved to see. That is why I continued to feel that Wilcox, somehow cognizant of the old data which my uncle had possessed, had been imposing on the veteran scientist. These responses from esthetes told disturbing tale. From February 28 to April 2 a large proportion of them had dreamed very bizarre things, the intensity of the dreams being immeasurably the stronger during the period of the sculptor's delirium. Over a fourth of those who reported anything, reported scenes and half-sounds not unlike those which Wilcox had described; and some of the dreamers confessed acute fear of the gigantic nameless thing visible toward the last. One case, which the note describes with emphasis, was very sad. The subject, a widely known architect with leanings toward theosophy and occultism, went violently insane on the date of young Wilcox's seizure, and expired several months later after incessant screamings to be saved from some escaped denizen of hell. Had my uncle referred to these cases by name instead of merely by number, I should have attempted some corroboration and personal investigation; but as it was, I succeeded in tracing down only a few. All of these, however, bore out the notes in full. I have often wondered if all the the objects of the professor's questioning felt as puzzled as did this fraction. It is well that no explanation shall ever reach them.
The press cuttings, as I have intimated, touched on cases of panic, mania, and eccentricity during the given period. Professor Angell must have employed a cutting bureau, for the number of extracts was tremendous, and the sources scattered throughout the globe. Here was a nocturnal suicide in London, where a lone sleeper had leaped from a window after a shocking cry. Here likewise a rambling letter to the editor of a paper in South America, where a fanatic deduces a dire future from visions he has seen. A dispatch from California describes a theosophist colony as donning white robes en masse for some "glorious fulfiment" which never arrives, whilst items from India speak guardedly of serious native unrest toward the end of March 22-23.
The west of Ireland, too, is full of wild rumour and legendry, and a fantastic painter named Ardois-Bonnot hangs a blasphemous Dream Landscape in the Paris spring salon of 1926. And so numerous are the recorded troubles in insane asylums that only a miracle can have stopped the medical fraternity from noting strange parallelisms and drawing mystified conclusions. A weird bunch of cuttings, all told; and I can at this date scarcely envisage the callous rationalism with which I set them aside. But I was then convinced that young Wilcox had known of the older matters mentioned by the professor.

The Mystic MARRAIGE exercise- Attuning to the alpha-brain wave state in order to communicate with spirit being.

This exercise activates and aligns the upper four chakra centres of the body (for more information on chakras go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chakra). It increses the flow of energy to them and it enables greater use of our intuitive and higher self capabilities. This in turn facilitates recognition of our spirit guides. Take your time with this exercise. Pay attention to the sequence.
This helps induce the altered state or 'alpha brain wave' state that enables us to see spirits more easily.
1. Bring your attention (your conciousness) to your "third eye". Envision this area growing into a brilliant crystalline light. As you inhale, see and feel this area warm and brighten with this light. Hold for a count for ten. Slowly exhale. Repeat three times.
2. Now, as you inhale, draw the light backward from the brow area through the head, ending at a point near the crown of the head. This is the area of the crown chakra. This chakra awakens the Higher Self Conciousness and your preexisting reunion with the spirit realm.
3. As you visuialze this ball of light moving backward, also imagine a bridge of light- a rainbow bridge-being formed between the brow and the crown chakras. See and feel it as warm and shimmering with energy.
4. Hold the focus of light in the crown area for a count of ten, then exhale slowly. Repeat three times. Feel the warmth and energy filling the enitre head.
5.Now bring your conciousness, in the form of that brilliant light, down to the throat area. See it as a rainbow bridge extending from the crown centre to the throat. Here is another major chakra. This chakra is aligned with creative will and the ability of clairaudience.
6. As you inhale, feel this centre come alive with crystalline brilliance. Hold the breath for a count of ten, as with other two centres, then slowly exhale. Repeat at least three times. Imagine and feel the energy and light intensify with each breath.
7. Now draw the conciousness and energy down from the throat to the area of the heart. See this as yet another extension of the rainbow bridge. Feel the area of hte heart warm and begin to radiate with crystalline energy.
8. Inhale, holding for a count of ten. As you hold your breath, feel the energy intensify; as you exhale, see and feel the link that has been formed with the other three energy centres. Slowly exhale and repeat three times the least. The higher centres of perceptions are activated.
9. You must now complete the circuit. Draw the conciousness upward from  the heart to the third eye, completing the rainbow bridge that connects the four centres. Feel this bridge grow with new intensity and energy from having activated and aligned itself with other three chakras.
Now, once you have performed this exercise several times you will become aware of its effects upon you. Then, as you reach the final step, allowing yourself to bask with renewed energy, open your senses to those of the spirit realm.
Keep your eyes closed, extend your sources outward. Pay attention to any new or different sensations. Do you sense a presence? Are any particular colors standing your mind's eye? Do you feel a tinging, pressure or tempreture change? Are there any new, unexplained fragrances? Do you sense anything different?
Don't force it as new impressions and spirit contacts will come softly and naturally as your energy feild becomes more and more storng with the excersise. Ask, mental questions if you sense a strange presence (without opening your eyes, of course) Is there a guide close to me? Are you male or female? Will you identify with a touch?
Pause and use your senses. If your feel something, ask it to be repeated. This will help you confirm that its not a product of your mind. If there is no touch ask for a color, symbol, fragrance, or visual image. Ask form some kind of identification. If you don't get it initially don't be discouraged. As you continue your efforts will be renewed.
When you get a response continue the mental questioning: name? purpose? Visualize yourself having a conversation with this being. Remember imagination and visualization helps us to access the subconcious which is attuned to subtle nergies and entities around us.

I personally recommend that if you are very much intrested in occult communications with spirit beings you gather first as much information as you can. Here are some of my personally recommended books:
Learn How to Meet & Work withe Spirit Guides by Ted Andrews
The Spiritualist Manual (anoynomus)
The Key of Solomon by King Solomon (translated by Samuel Mathers)
Necronomicon compiled by Simon Ed.

And for further quieries, information or to borrow books feel free to contact me.
Thanking you

What exactly will the morning winter solstice of 2012 be like?

We have entered a critical time in the history of humanity and the clock is ticking...

The Veracity

24th December, 2010 Christmas Eve
I’m having great problems with my girlfriend. She doesn’t seem any longer interested in me. She is ignoring me completely. I feel raw pain in my heart as I get up in the morning, getting ready for my school thinking of her; knowing deep that today would too be the same- she would ignore me.
But nevertheless I have hope in my heart because I really love her very much and am ready to do anything for her. However even after several assurances I give to myself that she would once again return to normal and that this was just a phase in our relation, I still feel gloomy and lonely in this world.
                                                                           ¤
I am standing in my school’s morning assembly. Today is Christmas’ Eve and there would specially be some program today in this assembly. We just get one holiday on Christmas in our school because of the Christian minority present here.
There seems to be an invigorating wind blowing which seems to be passing the message of Christmas-that of peace and harmony. I feel better due to the festive air blowing during the assembly.
As usual our assembly starts with our morning hymns and prayers. It is Friday and on Friday Assembly we first sing a Sanskrit hymn- Varkratunda Mahakarya followed by Amo Tatsyaya and finally my favorite and according to me the only good song that we have ever sung in these songs; I always loved this song, from the beginning I heard it- The Song of God’s Love-
Love is what that made us,
And it was Love that saved us,
                                                      Love was god’s plan,
                                                        when he made man.
                                                God’s Divine Nature is Love,
Born of God’s Love we must love Him.
That’s why He made us to Love Him
                                                            But only when,
                                                           We love all men,
Can we partake of God’s Love.
As usual I tried to sing this song as enthusiastically as possible. I realized that I was singing the song today more loudly and more conscious than I had ever sung before. It felt like the Christmas air was really bringing me into some kind of trance.
I really was enjoying today singing this song. I was feeling special; I was feeling loved and cared. It was like all my worries had vanished in a jiffy!
And then suddenly there came a light- very bright light. My eyes were still closed, my mouth singing the song more and more loudly. The bright light I could see through my closed eyes. The light had formed somewhere along the top part of my closed-eye-vision. I perfectly knew this was not a part of my imagination- I was certainly not imagining things.
But the light was nothing compared to the feeling it brought with itself. When the light shone, it brought to me immense amounts of Peace and Love. I felt so special- so much did I knew now that I was really loved, even though the source of this Love I did not knew. All I knew that I was feeling the top of this world, like I had died and was now in God’s Heaven……
God! This is it! This had to be God. The light- the bright light had brought with itself, to me so much ecstasy and feeling of being loved that it had to be God! It had to be Him.
Maybe it was God’s Angel or something…No! It couldn’t, it had to be Him. God! Oh my! I was feeling so good……I was going to erupt due to this happiness.
Then after some time of this Love, happiness and ecstasy with constant glaring at the Bright Light which was surely God, Himself, the song finally ended. The prayer hymns had ended and now it was time to open my eyes.
But I didn’t want to. I did not want to break the link. I could still feel God. I could still see the Bright Light and I still felt immense relaxation from every tension in the world, but now it would end as I had to open my eyes.
But I still resisted, ultimately after which I had to open. Others had already opened their eyes ages ago and some were glaring at me wondering what I was doing.
I ignored them…they were foolish people. They never dared to explore the miracles of their lives even when they would see it in front of their eyes. They were afraid of the Invisible and the Unknown. But I had witnessed a miracle and was ready to accept it even though I could give no reasonable explanation to it.
Hey! Maybe I was being arrogant. I should not think that only I accept to witness miracles. Aren’t everybody made equal. I shouldn't have thought that.
And then I remembered a quote-
‘Yours is not a better way, yours is just another way’
How much more true can a saying be! I thought.

Temptation

5th December, 2010
There is The Annual Day in my school today. I’m not participating in any particular program but I have dubbed my voice for a very important character in one of the plays. I’m looking forward to attend the program, especially because I want to talk to my girlfriend there. But at the same time I don’t think it’s important for me to be there instead I could spend time with my parents today who have their marriage anniversary today. So we finally decide that we shall not attend the program instead we shall go to a Temple of a prophet near the coast and afterwards will go for a movie.
And there, I, my father, my mother and my sister went towards the coast towards the shrine of the prophet. After taking some rounds inside the temple observing but not praying I decided to go towards the coast.
My family is still inside attending to the prophet, asking for every kind of favor from him because they think he has his communications with God and can propose to Him their requests.
Outside the Temple lies a concrete compound in front of which lies a huge garden enclosed by crossed wires beyond which lies the beach. The beach is blocked by a constructed wall with a rusted gate-entrance followed by steps which ultimately lead to the beach. Beyond the compound lies a corridor which leads to the gate. This corridor is very narrow which is side-lined by the gardens enclosed in wires. I felt a strange urge to go to the beach.
It is going dark very swiftly. In fact it had already grown dark pink and the sky was turning black. The moon was not noticeable. There was only one source of light in the corridor. Few people were strolling around the compound. I finally decided to go for the corridor and towards the beach. I slowly start walking looking towards the long corridor. The other end is not noticeable now due to the darkness and the limited light. But I know that there lies a gate which would lead me to my current temptation.
There is a bolstering chill in the air. I stand in front of the entrance of the corridor and try to look far away towards the end but still see no end except the infinite obscurity. Going towards The Gate would mean I would plunge simply in a deep ocean of absolute darkness. Nevertheless I start walking.
I know even in the darkness the straight, narrow corridor will lead me to The Gate. I keep walking deeper and deeper into the ocean. The darkness is so intense that vision even for a meters radius is impossible. I walk; I walk until I can’t see anything. And deeper that I go fainter the the sounds of the world are heard to me and more intense becomes the melody of the ocean waves crashing against the coast. I pause and hear the sound of the sea. There seems to be a message it wants to convey to me. I feel its calling me towards itself. I wonder whether it wants to tell me about some treasure that it hides within its depths or some old secret which some old pirate had told him ages ago.
I start walking again. I have started feeling creepy and afraid in the blinding darkness. I only walk towards the distant sounds of the waves that call me. But soon I have been drained of all my courage. And then my Heart tells me that I have to revive my courage and keep walking. I start singing loudly. I sing as the song comes spontaneously from my heart.
This act gives me great comfort in the dark. I keep walking. The rush of the waves are heard more distinctly now. I know they are calling me. I walk and walk neither knowing when the end to this Path will come nor caring about the world I had left behind.
And then all of a sudden a faint light can be seen and at a foot’s distance I can see the end beyond which lies a border made up of dust and gravel beyond which lies The Gate. I run towards the end of the corridor and stop there. The voices of the waves are calling me from that rusting Gate. I can clearly hear them. I cannot see what lies beyond The Gate but I know there must be the descending steps and then the beach and then the sea-my Temptation.
“Come, come to me…” the voice roars.
“But why, what do you want of me?” I ask, afraid.
“That shall I say when thee come to me”
“But I don’t think I should.” I said not knowing why I was denying my Temptation for going to the sea.
“Come and thou wilt be rewarded” the waves tempt me.
But I still have my doubts. What if this is a trick? What if the Evil was tricking me towards a trap? What if I find nothing, but Evil on descending towards my Temptation? But this could really be a secret concealed to me by God, Himself. Still I’m not so sure. I don’t think that God would have manifested Himself in that darkness. I stand there, unable to make a decision, staring at The Gate and trying to imagine what I would find if I go beyond it towards the Temptation. And then I remember a quote-
“Where your heart is, there your treasure will be also”
What a wise quote! I think. And I ask my Heart, “Where do you think should I go?”
My Heart considers the question and replies wisely, “Father, you live in the Visible and Exact. A point comes when you look towards the Invisible and Feeble, and are tempted by a strange urge to be there, you feel it calling you. And driven by this Temptation you go towards the Bridge which leads you to the Invisible. You walk on it. You walk in spite the fact that a constant darkness lies on The Bridge which conceals the Invisible from your vision.
“And then finally you reach a point where The Bridge between the Visible and the Invisible ends ending a journey driven by Temptation. There lies a border which separates the Bridge and the Gate leading to the Invisible beyond which you think lays your heart. Coming nearer to the conclusion of the journey the Temptation grows faint and weak. And then you realize that maybe it was a useless journey. Well, I say that your Temptation is not bad. Nor it is good. But it has leaded you to a path where you have to re-think and re-consider your objectives. Well in this journey you have learnt many things; things which may later help you in the Path of your Calling. But this journey does end here. It is better that you now return to the Visible where your family is waiting for you. Go now and don’t look back as you go towards the other end, to the Visible because if you feel regret over your decision to go away and look back towards the Invisible your Soul will be destroyed in a manner which will be incurable. Go now, go!”
I take a last look at the border and The Gate and The Invisible and turn my back towards them. I can already hear the anger in the voices from the invisible, angry that I did not enter their territory. The cry for me and wail me to come back. As I walk farther away my Temptation rises again and I feel an urge to look back but I remember the words of Heart and battle my inner temptation.
“Come back for here is your real treasure!” cry the voices.
I keep walking, ignoring the innumerable attempts of the voices to tempt me to look back. I keep walking towards the Visible, now the voices of the world once again becoming clearer and as the voices of the Invisible faint. I finally win the battle with my Temptation and crushing my regret. My Heart had really leaded me to the right path. I no longer feel regret for following my Heart as I had when I had turned my back towards the Invisible.
And I reach the end of the Bridge between the Visible and the Invisible. I enter in the Visible. I walk on the compound in front of which lies the prophet’s Temple and my family waiting for me with worried looks on their faces. They will surely ask me if I was insane to walk in that lurking darkness!
But they know not, what a fantastic battle I had won in that fantastic journey.

Brida - Paulo Coelho

The scene around her changed. She was no longer in a desert, but immersed in a kind of liquid, in which various strange creatures were swimming.
‘Life is about making mistakes,’ said the Teacher. ‘Cells went on re-producing themselves in exactly same way for millions of years, until one of them made a mistake, and introduced change into that endless cycle of repetition.’
Brida was gazing in amazement at the sea. She didn’t ask how it was possible for them to breathe in there; all she wanted to hear was the Teacher’s voice, all she could think of was a similar journey she had made and which had begun in a field of wheat.
‘It was a mistake that had set the world in motion,’ said the Teacher. ‘Never be afraid of making a mistake.’
‘But Adam and Eve were driven out of Paradise due to a mistake
‘And they will return one day knowing the miracle of the heavens and of the entire world. God knew what he was doing when he drew their attention to the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. If he hadn’t wanted them to eat it, he would never have mentioned it.’
            ‘So why did he, then?’
‘In order to set the Universe in motion.’
